Homburg Apeldoorn-speler IM Ilja Zaragatski heeft tijdens het toernooi in Vlissingen zijn tweede grootmeesternorm gehaald. Zaragatski is een gewaardeerd speler in het eerste van Homburg Apeldoorn. In 1997 deed hij al mee aan de eerste Apeldoorse Schaak-4-daagse.
Over Vlissingen bericht hij:
Now that I've been participating at my favorite tournament in Vlissingen for many years, it sure has become about time to play a really good one! I managed to score my second GM norm, achieving 7/9 points and finishing third. In retrospect, the fact that the daily rounds usually start in the evening, so one can go to the beach all day long probably helps. :)
At the beginning of the tournament I succeeded in beating four comparably worse rated players, before I -although I even had the chance for a draw a couple of times in this game- was not able to persist recently married strong Dutch Grandmaster Erwin l'Ami with black. I came back to the top tables at the expense of IM Yochanan Afek (sorry about that Yochanan) and English Grandmaster Stewart Haslinger, which turned out to be a particularly important game, that for this reason I have chosen to comment on.
In the last two rounds I accomplished to withstand Ukranian Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk and Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran, both rated >2650 and this way was able to celebrate the norm.
